Band History

This week, Dre guides the band through how we first got together and started playing around Chicago. Mad Bread started in the early 2000s as Nate and his friend Joel started writing songs and playing guitar together. Nate’s brother Adam played guitar, but learned banjo to add a different sound.

I worked with Nate at a local coffee shop. I eventually went over to hang out with Adam, Nate and Joel altogether. At that time, I was playing bass in several cover bands. The original folk band I was with had just let me go a few months before that, and I was ready to start working with some new musicians.

The songs Nate and Joel had written were some of the best original songs I had heard in a while. I got us a couple shows around town and my friend Carl from the previous band joined us.

Carl and I are still playing today as Mad Bread with my son Andy on drums and our friend Ted on bass. I moved aside to play electric guitar and mandolin. Over the years, the lineup has changed multiple times, but it was the core lineup of Nate, Adam, Carl and myself for the longest time.

We had a drummer for so long it’s hard to not mention Mark and how good it was to share the stage with him.

Here’s where we’re still on the internet if you want to hear Maad Bread’s music. Check out our YouTube channel for a live show at Martyr’s. We also hosted some livestream shows there during the lockdown.

You can purchase Mad Bread albums at bandcamp.
